The Fox Theatre is like Tucson’s living room—where the city gathers to celebrate, connect, and create memories that last a lifetime. With its glowing marquee and grand Art Deco style, the Fox has welcomed generations through its doors, making it a true gem in the heart of downtown.
The Fox Theatre opened on April 11, 1930, with a party so big that Congress Street was closed and waxed for dancing, four live bands played, and free trolley rides brought everyone downtown. Built as a dual vaudeville and movie house, the Fox quickly became the “crown jewel” of Tucson’s entertainment world, hosting movies, live performances, community events, and even Saturday morning Mickey Mouse Club screenings for local children.
Over the decades, the Fox saw the city change—new theaters and TV drew crowds away, and the theater closed in 1974. But Tucson’s love for the Fox never faded. After sitting empty for 25 years, it was rescued from demolition by the Fox Tucson Theatre Foundation. Thanks to a $13 million restoration, the Fox reopened in 2005, beautifully restored and ready for a new era of music, movies, and community gatherings. Today, it stands as the only known Southwestern Art Deco movie palace and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its unique style and acoustic design.
The Fox Theatre is located at 17 W. Congress St., Tucson, AZ 85701.
The Fox is more than a theatre—it’s a place where Tucson comes together. People visit to see their favorite musicians, laugh at comedy shows, watch classic films, or take a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic building. The Fox hosts a wide variety of events for all ages and tastes, from jazz and blues to family shows and global artists. Free monthly tours let you explore the theatre’s grand design, learn about its history, and maybe even meet a friendly ghost or two.
Surrounded by downtown’s restaurants and nightlife, the Fox is the perfect spot for a night out or a special celebration. Its welcoming atmosphere, beautiful setting, and rich history make every visit memorable.
