Tucson Botanical Gardens: Tucson’s Living Oasis for Nature, Learning, and Community

Tucson Botanical Gardens

The Tucson Botanical Gardens is like a patchwork quilt—each garden, path, and flower bed is a unique piece stitched together to create a peaceful, colorful retreat in the middle of the city. Ranked #4 in the nation by USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for three years running, this lush oasis is a favorite spot for locals and visitors to relax, learn, and connect with nature.

The History and Story of the Location

The story of the Tucson Botanical Gardens began in 1964, when horticulturist Harrison G. Yocum opened his home garden to the public, showcasing an impressive collection of cacti and palms. As interest grew, the Gardens moved to their permanent home in 1974 on the historic Porter family property at 2150 N. Alvernon Way. Rutger and Bernice Porter, who built their adobe home and nursery here in the 1920s, dreamed of their land becoming a public garden. Bernice donated the property to the city in 1968, ensuring its legacy as a place for beauty, learning, and community gatherings.

Over the years, the Gardens have grown to include 20 themed pocket gardens, a Butterfly & Orchid Pavilion, and the Children’s Discovery Garden. The site still features many original plantings from the Porter family, blending history and horticulture in every corner. Today, the Gardens are a nonprofit hub for education, art, and conservation, offering classes, events, and exhibits for all ages.
